Can I mention that I was depressed in middle school in an essay?

My grandma died when I was 10. We were very close and I spent most of middle school (6th and 7th grades) very depressed and in therapy. In an essay about a person who has ppsitiviely impacted my life, I chose my best friend since 1st grade and chronicled her support of me thoughout my life, including that time period. I wasn’t clinically depressed and I was never on medication, it was just intense grieving and negative behaviors like self isolation and emotional overeating. Now I’m afraid it makes me look unstable? I concluded with a bit about how I managed to become the happy, confident person I am today because of the support of my friend and therapy, but I’ve heard you’re not supposed to mention this sort of thing to collleges so I’m worried. Thank you.
