Hi. My name is Erica, and I’m an upcoming sophomore in high school. In two years I’ll be graduating and after that I’ll be going to college. I was thinking about my passions… I’m starting to think of majoring in music technolgy. I’m also starting to fall in love with photography. I just love taking pictures, I also love taking videos and vlogging. I go to a performing arts high school and my classes are filled up with orchestra, music tech, PE, spanish, science, math, world history, and english. All eight classes are full, which means I can’t take any photography classes. It’ll probably be the same the next two years, so I won’t have any experience with photography. Unless if I drop PE senior year I could take a photography class. But could I still minor in photography even if I took one class of photography?
It will depend on the school. Some schools may require you to submit a portfolio, but many do not require it for a minor. Many high schools don’t offer photography classes anyway, the ones around here don’t, so not having a high school class wouldn’t necessarily be looked at as bad. If you’re really interested in photography, see if there are any classes in your area outside of school. A local college could have a summer program you could take to build your knowledge and skills. If there is a camera shop in your area, they may offer classes as well. You could try to contact area photographers to ask about job shadowing to learn about what they do. You could also find online classes. Lots of possibilities beyond a high school class. Also, take pictures constantly. Everywhere you go, take pictures. The more you do something, the better you will get.
