Can I only take the classes listed on assist.org and still get a TAG for UC Davis?

Hi everyone, I’m planning on transferring to UC Davis from saddleback community colllege as a civil engineering major. I was just wondering if I only have to take the classes listed on assist.org for my major, and still be able to get a TAG for that school.

I’m going to be a freshman this fall and I was really hoping to get as much feedback as possible, since I’m a newbie.

Is there anyone willing to reply? There’s been almost a hundred views of this thread and no one’s answered.

You will need to complete the IGETC to be eligible for TAG. As for those major courses on assist, those pertain to your major and might or might not overlap with IGETC courses.

IGETC. Pre-reqs. 3.10 GPA.

I don’t think engineering requires IGETC, engineering tends to be lax on general ed, but don’t quote me

couple frd of mine got accepted to Berkeley, davis, LA without IGETC certification… and they are Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering major. I would said, IGETC certification is not required and personally think it is unnecessary for any Eng major.

It is like 4 GE classes rule. You only need to take four plus English/math requirements. Also one life science class. It is not the big of a difference. I think IGETC is 5 GE classes? lol

if you took a solid AP load in highschool, your IGETC will mostly be done regardless

Yup just take whatever is on assist.org and then you will probably have to take a few more humanities classes as well. I did TAG for Davis, and it worked fine. Im going to Cal though (thank god). Davis TAG requires so many courses its kinda crazy, Cal wanted the least.

Good luck getting into all of your classes. Talk to someone at the transfer center at your CC, they are generally more knowledgeable than the regular counselors who don’t seem to know squat.

I’m Mechanical Engineering by the way. And you do not need IGETC for engineering.

I transferred to UCD with a TAG for Electrical Engineering with IGETC so to answer your question…

In short, No. You will need to complete everything listed on assist.org (one or two missing prerequisite is ok, but will lower your chance) plus the subject requirement (explained below) in order to qualify for admission to the University. The courses listed on assist.org is only to qualify for applying to the college of engineering alone.

IGETC is strongly discouraged and not required for TAG for Davis because you already have a lot of prerequisites to work on. If you can finish it, more power to you, but it will also mean that you will have to stay longer at a CCC. I did and I regretted it because I was taking four upper division EEC classes per quarter and it was bad!

You need to make sure you complete the courses outlined by your TAG, if you can’t finish a course and do not notify your TAG coordinator at Davis, it becomes voided and your application will be tossed into the regular applicant pool.

Wow, those were awesome replies. Thanks a lot for helping guys. Wizrd54, is UC Davis really that bad compared to Cal? I was thinking of going for berkeley but then i heard about how insanely competitive it is, and how the professors barely teach you anything. I know Berkeley’s engineering program is better than Davis’ by a long shot, but I also know that Davis is really good in the science field, so its engineering program should be pretty good, and it’s the fourth best UC. Do you really think it would make a difference if I attended Davis instead of Berkeley for engineering?

You might as well apply to Berkeley too. It’s all the same application just check another box to send it to Cal. And if you end up doing TAG for Davis I am pretty sure you will have gone above and beyond the classes Berkeley wants you to take. Definitely do not sell yourself short. Davis is fine, I just hate it because of more personal issues (ie a girl). I am also from suburbia in so cal, so it will be a nice change for me to go to Berkeley.

I am not super smart or anything, but I think I did well through my courses. I am not really worried about the competitiveness or anything like that once I get there. The large majority of transfers do the same, if not better than those who start as freshmen.

So are you saying that Berkeley has a TAG in your school, because in my school they don’t. And that’s a coincidence, because I’m also from suburbia in so cal lol.

Berkeley and UCLA don’t have TAG. I just meant the classes they want you to take will probably be done if you finish TAG for Davis. I went to OCC, so ya you are pretty close.

Alright I get it now. Thanks a lot for the help.
