Can I qualify for in state tuition?

I live in Louisiana with my mom where I go to school. My parents are divorced and my dad is a resident of Alabama. They have joint custody, can I get in state tuition at an Alabama public school?

You have to check. Many states allow the children of a resident to attend at the in-state rates.

Residency rules are complicated and can vary from one public school in a state to another. You can google the name of the school and the word residency and generally find the regulations for residency.

That’s what I did for UA:

http://registrar.ua.edu/policies/residency/residency-tuition/

My take after a brief read is only if your Dad is providing most of your support since you said they have joint legal custody. I’m assuming you will be under 19 and unmarried. But you should read the regulations more carefully for the particular schools you are interested in.

What are your stats? You may have the stats to get the equivalent of instate rates or an even better award.

About 3.5 uw and a 31 act

In-state that gets you full tuition at Alabama, out of state, you’re a point away from full tuition, but you receive 2/3 tuition (comes out to paying about $8000 per year). Any chance you’re really close to a 32? It seems you won’t be qualified as in-state for tuition purposes, right?

You need to retest. If you get the 32 (or 1400 M+CR SAT) then you get free tuition.

Right now, with a 31, you would get less than the instate rate as an OOS student, but why not try for free tuition?

Also…what is your intended major?
