Can I recover from a terrible midyear report?

three D’s, two C’s, and two B’s give or take

Look, I was being stupid and lost hope. I’m doing everything I can to change it but things are looking grim. What can I hope for?

Three c’s two b’s and two a’s are doable and that will not get offers rescinded. And if you do that and don’t have good rd outcomes or current options. Gap year or CC. Something productive and the second half scores will be considered.

Is that the midyear report going to colleges? That will hurt. If you are already in somewhere and you can bring those grades up by the end of the year, as @privatebanker mentioned, you’ll probably be okay.

You might have to start at community college or google the list of colleges that accept everyone.

From other posts it looks like you were applying to some very competitive college such as Georgetown and Rice. Yes, three D’s on a midyear report sent to these colleges will definitely hurt your chance of admission. If there is any valid reason why your grades dropped so much (ex. an illness that caused you to miss a great deal of school, death of a parent etc.) then ask your guidance counselor to address it in a note to be sent along with your mid-year transcript.

You need to figure out why your grades dropped and find a way to fix it. If you can get things in order by year end you have a chance to hold onto any admissions offers you currently have. Otherwise I agree that CC, a non-selective college, or a gap year might be your next logical step.

I have until TUESDAY. Can’t I bring the first half of the marking period in to the equation?

For colleges that receive a midyear report, the poor grades (especially the D grades) could significantly impact your chance of admission. For those that do not normally receive a midyear report, you need to report the D grades to them, because if the first time they see your D grades is in the summer on your final high school transcript, you are at high risk of having your admission rescinded.

Your backup option is to attend an open admission community college, get your study habits in order, and do well there, so that you can apply as a transfer (junior level with more college record to put your poor high school record behind you) to a four year school to finish a bachelor’s degree.

That’s silly, there’s no reason to go to a community college when I can fix everything now. I’m aiming for straight C’s.

How does your school report their mid year report that they would send to colleges? I ask because at my DD’s HS, students got quarter grades and reports, but only semester grades (1st + 2nd quarter + midterm exams combined) were officially reported to colleges.

If schools are really going to see a 3 Ds, you have a problem. Not only could it impact admission but you could also be rescinded at schools you’ve already been accepted.

Do whatever you can to get those grades up.

If you have already been accepted to schools, you may need to call them to alert them to see what you can work out. You may need to retake a class over the summer before matriculating.

OP, a bit confused by your Post 4. Are you saying these grades are second quarter grades vs 1 semester grades? If these are just second quarter grades and you have better first quarter grades, the schools will see both sets of grades in the mid year report. Is this a “blip” or a trend? Are there some unusual circumstances that your GC is willing to explain in his/her report?

You are very unclear then.

Have you been accepted to any colleges already?
Has the midyear report been sent to every college you are waiting to hear back from?
Are the three D’s your mid-year grade?
What range of colleges have you applied to?

I meant the first half of my 8th semester, or 3rd marking period or something like that.

Then as long as your school only reports by semester on official transcripts, you should be OK. Do what you can to get those grades up.

Agree with the above. You need to do everything in your power to be sure you don’t have any D’s as a final grade.
