Can I Send an Email Fixing a Small Mistake?

Title pretty much says it all. I submitted to a few schools and noticed a mistake in the national ranking I put for my sports team one year (#27 instead of #33). My sport is super regionally concentrated, so this is really #33 out of maybe 400 teams total, the equivalent of being in the top 300 or so of basketball or a sport like that, so not really super impressive. However, I don’t want to be caught lying or anything, so should I email the schools now and explain my calculation error (because I had to add up divisions), or should I wait for them to contact me and then explain the mistake?

I also did this on my resume, so some of the rankings there are incorrect.

Can you? Yes. You have free will.

Should you? No. Nobody needs to waste time with trivial corrections - not you, not admissions.

Do you think that it’s okay if I leave it uncorrected and then just explain my error later in the event that they check it?

They won’t check. But sure. Cross that bridge if you come to it

Thank you! I’m just worried because I’m applying to small colleges where they might actually have the time. Hopefully they won’t, or they’ll understand that I made a mistake.

Hmmm. Do nothing. They’ll never check and your team rank says little or nothing about you and your contribution.

They want to admit you, not your team.

What did you contribute as a team leader, teammate etc. that’s far more impactful than your team’s rank.

Thank you! That’s good to know. I was named captain for a season, although the coach that named me captain has left (hopefully I can still contact him).

The coach does not need to still be at the school nor do you need to contact the former coach to confirm your captaincy.

Thank you for letting me know! I honestly thought I had to have contacts prepared in the event that they ask me to confirm anything, so this definitely makes me feel better because I’m not really sure if I could reach out to him.

Why do u need to contact him?

You write that you served as team captain.

Done

This is the honor system.

You are creating issues that don’t exist.

Be honest. Be truthful about your impacts. Be done.

I’ve just heard things about AOs verifying, especially after recent scandals, and want to ensure that I have proof of everything I did. But it seems that even now it’s mostly honor system so maybe people are just trying to scare others out of lying

Some colleges conduct random audits.

In the highly unlikely event that you’re audited, your team involvement would be the question, not the team ranking. Chill. Let it go.

Sounds good, thank you for all your help!

No one will change their answer.

Please stop worrying. This is really, really nothing to worry about.
