And then transfer to somewhere like UCLA later. I’ve gotten accepted to Cal Poly and would like end up at UCLA at the end of my college career.

It will be very hard to do so, since you are already at a 4-year institute. If you moseyed down to a community college, your chances are simply better. CCs have credit agreements and even acceptance agreements with the UC. It is a much safer choice to be at a CC for two years, than a 4-year for two years.

UCLA does not have a guaranteed admissions program with California Community Colleges (CCCs), but it does prioritize junior transfers from CCCs. You’d have a better chance getting into UCLA from a CCC than a CSU simply on the basis of that alone. Aim for a 3.6+ GPA… you can look at UCLA’s transfer pages for statistics on average GPAs for transfer by major.

Also, many UCs do have guaranteed transfer agreements from CCCs, so you could in theory have a backup plan if UCLA didn’t work out.

However, in today’s economy, almost any plan needs to be flexible - admission processes are likely to get more restrictive in the coming years.
