Can I still appeal for more financial aid if I applied ED?

I was admitted into a school that I applied ED for, but want to appeal for more financial aid. I know students who do RD/EA, are the ones who usually appeal, so I was wondering if it would be sensible to appeal if I applied ED. Also, any tips on the appealing process and exactly how to carry out an appeal would be appreciated  Thanks in advance!

Did you withdraw all your other applications after getting the Ed acceptance as you were required to do?

If so you do not have much bargaining power. You should have appealed when you got you ED decision.

.

Then you are in violation of your ED agreement. Your ED school will not look favorably on that. They may even rescind your acceptance.

@bluebird1234 was your original offer ED or EA? If ED, @TomSrOfBoston is correct and you will be in deep trouble with the ED school.

When did you get your ED acceptance?

Deleting your post (#2) in which you admit to not withdrawing your other applications will not change the fact that you violated the ED agreement. Appealing for more financial aid at the ED school will make them aware of that violation.

You should have appealed or declined your ED much earlier! However, if something has changed recently (such as a major health or financial event in your family) you can appeal for more aid.

If you do not have information that is new or changed since you applied for aid, saying “please give me more money” is not likely to do much, unfortunately. If you cannot afford the school, withdraw and try to find someplace with rolling admissions at an affordable price.

If you accepted an offer of admission from your ED school you are bound by that acceptance WITH the financial aid offer you received when you were accepted ED.

The best thing you can do now…withdraw all those other acceptances, and applications…which you should have already done!

You made a binding decision to attend your ED college.

uuummm… well, like the others have said, you’re in violation of your ED contract because you didn’t withdraw your other applications. that’s a huge no-no. however, whenever i received my ED acceptance to grinnell, i appealed my financial aid and received quite a bit more money. take that as you will.

@kalons Just to clarify – what was the timing of your appeal? I’m guessing it was prior to you accepting the ED offer.

@happy1 i sent my appeal before i accepted my ED offer, but i didn’t get confirmation of receiving more money until just a few days ago, a month and a week or so after i sent my appeal. in other words, i had to accept my ED offer before i found out the outcome of my appeal.

Yes…but @kalons you requested the appeal BEFORE you accepted the ED offer…right?

This student is trying to game the ED system…and did NOT request a financial aid appeal before or when she accepted the ED offer. The school is expecting her to attend this ED school WITH the offer she accepted.

The likelihood of the ED school considering a financial aid increase request now…is…well very low. This poster doesn’t mention a parent losing a job, or significant medical unreimbursed expenses…or their house burning down without insurance.

Now…having said all that…no school is going to force her to attend…even with an ED agreement to attend. So…she can contact the school and say she isn’t coming to their college.

But get more aid now? Not a likely thing to have happen.

Oh…and @kalons I’m betting you had good reasons and supporting documentation for getting additional aid from Grinnell.

@thumper1 yes, i requested my appeal before i accepted my ED offer. i’m sorry, i read it as if op hadn’t accepted her offer yet (which explains why i felt a little bit confused).

It’s March 17. Even for ED2, I would think that your decisions to attend would have been due by now.

The OP deleted a post where she said she did not withdraw her other applications when she accepted her ED acceptance. So it appears that the ED offer was accepted.

You can insist that the school process your appeal before giving you answer to their ED offer. But once you’ve accepted the ED offer, you must immediately withdraw your other apps. You can still ask for an FA appeal, but without new financial info, you are unlikely to get a better offer, and still must attend.

If you didn’t withdraw your other apps, but took the ED offer, you cheated. If the ED school finds out, they will likely rescind you, and the other schools that accepted you may as well. Plus, you GC could be in trouble. I’d withdraw all other apps today — send an email to the non-ED schools and just withdraw, whether they’ve accepted you or not.
