Can I still get in?

About a year ago, I realized how important an education is and started to buckle down in school. Since then I have received A’s in all my classes. I was a lazyass when it came to school back then, and my early semesters in my transcripts reflect that. I enjoyed making money and partying at the time and now both have been put in the back burner so I can finally finish up my last bit of coursework so I can transfer out of community college. I’m no idiot by any means and at the same time I understand that I am no genius. I feel I am more capable than other students in my classes. Whenever I have someone who seems intelligent in my class I make it a personal challenge to best them in every exam and assignment we have (It’s the competitive side in me).

Pretty much, my early semester was a train-wreck. I got F’s, and I even dropped out of 3 classes one semester. Pretty much I have a total of 6 drops and 2 F’s and a D that I have retaken for B’s in the following semester. Even as I progressed into my third year, extenuating circumstances such as being picked as an alternate on a jury and my parents losing the house and moving back to their home country caused me to mess up another important semester. Since then, I have received A’s in all my classes. I am currently done with my general ed classes and now working on my engineering pre-reqs.

I plan on receiving A’s for the rest of my courses. I know how difficult that is going to be since the rest of my classes are going to be all pre-reqs (calc 3, general chem, and calc based physics) but I feel like I am competent enough to pass those classes with an A.

Now my GPA isn’t horrible. After retaking classes and having a solid year, I was able to get it to a 3.0 tipping to a 3.1. After this semester I should bump it to a 3.2/3.3.

Pretty much my question is in the title of this thread…can I still get in to any UC’s? I really want to go to UCI and understand I can tag after this semester, but I really want to apply to UC’s this coming fall and if I tag I have to wait a full year to apply. I’m just wondering if I have a good shot at any UC’s (excluding UCR) if I maintain my current ambitions and receive A’s in all my coursework. I plan on transferring as a Mechanical or Chemical Engineer. I know this is a long read and I really appreciate whoever takes their time and answers this.

Yes because you can get academic renewal for the Fs and Ds or retake them. Both will replace the bad grades in your gpa.

I think you can. Everyone messes up. It’s life. If you maintain the good grades and write a steller personal statement, you should be good. Include the explanation behind your earlier grades in your essay or additional comments section and I think you should be good. Take advantage of TAG and/ or TAP if you can.

You can TAG UCSC with a 3.0. If you can get your GPA up to a 3.2, you can TAG Irvine. I would make that your number 1 priority.

Thanks guys, your replies gave me a lot more confidence :)

No problem. I messed up my first few semesters and got a couple F’s and a D. I retook those closes and got 2 A’s and a B. You’re on the right track. Just make sure you meet the requirements for the TAG.
