Can I switch from a CMC to an IFC fraternity?

I know that you can’t switch fraternities within the IFC group, but is it possible to switch your fraternity from CMC to IFC since they’re both different groups? Also if i could switch my fraternity then how could I do it without making myself look like an unethical or dishonest person? I just feel like I have to do it because my fraternity is predominantly a specific race and I want to join a fraternity that has more ethnic diversity. Please let me know. Thank you.

Does CMC refer to claremont mckenna or something else? I highly doubt any IFC frat would let you join if you’ve been previously initiated into another social fraternity.

CMC stands for Collaborative Multicultural Council.

It’s a different council from IFC. That’s the reason why I ask if it’s possible to switch.

It is unrealistic to expect others who do not even know your school to know the answer to your question.

I don’t think that matters. You’d have to look into the national orgs’ bylaws. In mine, I’m pretty sure any social fraternity initiation bars you from pledging. Doesn’t matter whether it’s another IFC org or divine nine or I’m assuming CMC is covered too. Honors societies such as phi beta kappa and sigma xi are not included in this.

I think the CMC is a council specific to UCR, OP - different schools call it something different. (NMGC is the national governing body for a lot of multicultural Greek organizations. I do believe there is also a national council for both Latina/Latino organizations and for Asian organizations.)

So there’s two components to this question: Whether you can change your affiliation technically and whether you can do it practically.

The first part depends on the bylaws and agreements that your organization and your organization’s council has with the IFC. The fact that it’s a different council doesn’t matter in and of itself. For example, the sororities in the NPHC (the “divine nine”) have an agreement with the sororities of the NPC; you can’t leave one and join another. So if you pledge Delta Sigma Theta, you cannot later leave and join Alpha Chi Omega. (You also can’t join another within-council sorority, of course - so a former Delta cannot join Alpha Kappa Alpha, and a former Alpha Chi Omega can’t join Delta Zeta.)

So check your organization’s bylaws and the bylaws/agreements of any national council that they may be a part of it.

The second part is the practical part. Even if you could technically leave your fraternity and join another, that doesn’t mean that the members of any IFC fraternity on campus is going to welcome you into their organization. Some Greek organizations (and some chapters of some orgs) are not very accepting of people who joined other organizations, regardless of whether or not they leave before they try to join a new one. Some will question whether you will honor your lifelong pledge to them since you easily gave up a lifelong pledge to a different organization.

Can you double dip? (i.e. how legit is CMC?) I know you can be in a business/service fraternity while in an IFC one according to IFC bylaws, but I have no clue if CMC falls under the business/service distinction.
