Hi, I’ve taken the SAT last October, January of this year and taking it again next week. Is it possible for me to take it a 4th time in November without schools averaging my score? I’m applying to UCs and some east coast schools like Rutgers and Drexel which are all on the common app, and i noticed on the common app it allows you 3 slots for when you have taken the SAT

For example, I think UPENN averages the scores, so taking it four times wouldn’t be a good idea if you want to go there. Other than that, most schools superscore when they look at your SAT scores. They take your highest scores in each section - regardless of what sitting they are in- and put them together. For example, if you got an 800 in CR, a 700 in Math, and a 600 in Writing the first time, but you got a 600 in CR, an 800 in math, and an 800 in writing the second time, your superscore would be 2400. So if your college does that, (and most colleges do), then it is fine to take it a fourth time. Also, some colleges have score choice - which means you can choose which scores you want to send to them, and they can’t see the rest. But I’ve heard stories in which if you do this, the college will contact you and require you to send in the rest of the scores before they decide to accept you or not. About the common app, just put the three scores that you want the colleges to see. Very few schools actually average your score.

Either way, unless you did really bad the first three times, there shouldn’t be a need to take it a fourth time. You really shouldn’t use the real tests as practice tests that you can improve on. Treat each real SAT exam like it’s your last shot.
