Can I take one or two classes at a college without enrolling at that college?

I’m mainly speaking towards UC’s, because I don’t live nearby any private schools.

I’m curious. Can you pay to take one or two specific classes at a UC, without actually enrolling in said UC? (I don’t know if you pay on a credit by credit basis like at community colleges).

For example, let’s say you’re attending a state university or community college, but there’s a specific class at the UC down the road you’d really like to take - either the class isn’t offered at your state/community school, or the quality is bad in comparison. Could you pay to take that one class at the UC, even if you don’t receive formal credit for it?

Thanks!

Most UC’s have Extension courses you can take. Check the website for the UC you are interested in to see if the courses are available.

I think there is a long list of classes you can take without enrollment IIRC, I checked the link once when my kid was in high school.

You need to contact the college or university that you are interested in, and ask about enrolling for one or two classes in “non-degree” student status. Other names for that status might be “non-matriculated” or “special” student.

If you are able to enroll in that kind of status, you will have to pay the full cost of the course on a per-credit basis, and you will receive real college credits that are transferable. If you do not want to receive college credits, you need to ask if it is possible to audit the class. You will probably still have to pay the full fees, and you will receive a transcript indicating that you audited the course, but no grade will be reported.

Some colleges and universities do not allow anyone to enroll in classes in a non-degree status, some only allow students to enroll in certain classes in that status, and others will allow non-degree students to take any class that they have the pre-reqs. for and are willing to pay for. You really do have to investigate this yourself for each place on your list.

@gumbymom - I thought extension programs are all short-lived and either held at night or off campus?

My original question was asking if you could take an actual class (or two) * at the college with other students during the daytime /I, or if this type of arrangement doesn’t exist.

I know lots of people either audit or ghost classes, but that seems a little immoral to me. I was curious if there’s a more formal way to do this.

Thank you! This is just what I was looking for

How much would you say the average cost of one class would be? (for either one semester or the full year)
