Can I Take the US History SAT II Without taking APUSH?

So APUSH at my school was full, and i am in CP US History. I want to take the SAT II US History because I want to get into Notre Dame in South Bend. Is it possible to take the exam without taking APUSH? What will I have to study?

Of course you can.

SAT Subject Tests have nothing to do with the AP classes taken in school or end-of-the-year final AP examinations.

You can take whichever ones you want, regardless of your curriculum.

It’s definitely possible to pass the USH SAT II test without taking AP US History, however it may be more challenging. I just took the USH test yesterday (after passing the AP US test last year with a 4) and found the exam to be very similar to the AP Test.

Yes, but if you take APUSH your score will be significantly higher.

You can absolutely self study for the SAT ll US History without an APUSH class! You might actually be better off.

Be EFFICIENT with your studying time. I highly recommend Larry Krieger’s AP US History: The Essential Content. He knows the test so you can maximize your learning what will actually be tested, not some interesting but not tested areas. Use the book constantly during the year and stay a little ahead of your class (as many teachers do not finish in time for the SAT).

This should be combined with working with the real questions and exams released by the College Board. Buy The Official SAT Subject Tests in U.S. and World History (it gives you two exams) and use the free practice questions on the College Board site.

If you put in the time, you will be successful! I hope that you get to join the Fighting Irish!

there’s nothing that says you can’t. in fact, to prepare for this, you might as well self study APUSH, which is what I’m planning to do! Good luck! :)

I had a few friends take it without the class and they said it was pretty hard. Just something to keep in mind.

Of course! You just have to be a lot more determined. Our school only offered honors American History, but I studied my head off and came out with a 5. Get yourself a good book, sit down with a cup of juice, and get ready!

I bought the REA All Access APUSH book and have studied the first part already.
