I am a 17 Year old kid that will be applying to college and the biggest struggle in my life was for me and my family getting a green card. Two years ago we finally got it, so am I able to talk about being illegal without getting in trouble?

Links to any sources will be greatly appreciated

makes for an interesting story. I am thinking about doing something along the same lines, except that I will be giving my life story, in literary form. How my parents immigrated, how I immigrated, the racism towards me after 9/11, and how I came to be the top of my school. I always like interesting life stories, and I think yours would be a great one to tell :)

I would probably just focus on being an immigrant, and those hardships, not necessarily about being an illegal immigrant. I know this sounds stupid, but you can’t forget that admissions officers are still humans with a political view. They may not be in favor of your previous status, even if they are supposed to be impartial. Its a small chance, but its not something I would gamble on.

There are plenty of ways you could rephrase you topics to not including the illegal status, for example, the sacrifice of how your parents came to America for the sake of your education, and the difficulties that caused, including their to achieve legal status. Maybe you can leave it ambiguous whether you were illegal immigrants, but I wouldn’t outright say it. Be the politician in this case, avoid the hot as much as possible.

Dave you bring up a good point but I am Legal now in the us, got my green card two years ago, the IL in the Illegal part stresses the hardship of what my family and I went though. They paid taxes every year, jut like everyone else… what do you think?

How did they pay taxes if the government didn’t know you existed?

I agree with Dave–you should leave that part out just because you don’t know how it will be received. I personally admire immigrants, illegal immigrants especially, but many people let their political views stand in the way of individual circumstances.

I have lived most of my life as an illegal immigrant. I have my green card now, however, I will say that you should drop the illegal part. Your adcoms are very liberal, most of them will probably supporters of amnesty. However, there may be the one who hate illegals for whatever reason and take out his dislike on you, because we’re all “Mexicans looking for work.” Don’t take that risk with your education, write about your experience, not your legal status.
