I know it sounds weird, but I really want to go to UCSD as a Cognitive Science major. But what are my chances if I go to NYU as a Foreign Language Education major?
But… before I went to NYU, during high school, I went to community college as a part-time student, and I finished the IGETC (the general education) so technically, I already got rid of a year. Plus I’m taking some classes here at NYU.
But even though I finished all that my GPA right now is 3.2… do I not have a chance?
Please and thank you!

UCSD is starting to prefer more out-of-state students, as seen in the data bullets in this article: [UCSD admits fewer students than last year | San Diego Entertainer Magazine](UCSD admits fewer students than last year | SD Entertainer Magazine)

My initial hunch would be yes you have a shot, if Cognitive Science is not one of the most competitive majors. I heard that with UCSD’s next application cycle (and beyond) they will begin looking at transfer applicants’ essays, which they have never done as of this year. Writing a good essay might just be able to makeup for a low GPA.

Just curious though, why transfer out of NYU?

^ lol, right? For grad school and summer internships, i’m SPECIFICALLY applying to univs like NYU and the one’s in boston, austin, and atlanta; go metropolitan areas! they have clubs, a great social life, etc;

A 3.2 is more or less UCSD’s cutoff GPA for transfer students in state… with you being an out of state transfer, I imagine it will be much higher. As far Veritas’ link, that concerns only freshman applicants and not transfers, while out of state students are more appealing to the UC’s right now since they receive nearly twice as much money out of you, they are still mandated to have a more or less a 10:1 ratio between CCC transfers and anyone else.

But… I mean, I’m not really an out of state student… I go to NYU, but I’m originally from CA, so I’m legally a California citizen. Yeah, I know, I keep getting weird looks from people whenever I ask, but my parents can’t afford to have me go to NYU for this long.
If my GPA sucks would writing a good essay help then?

Look up if you fit the California Residency requirement on the UC website.

[UC Davis General Catalog | Residence for Tuition Information](Tuition & Residence)

As for essays, only UCB and UCLA are guaranteed to read them… UCSD is not known for it.

In addition to possibly not being a resident, you’re also from a 4 year school which doesn’t help, although, being that it’s not a 4 year school in California, if you qualify for residency, you might have a better shot than most applicants doing a CSU-UC or UC-UC transfer. Basically, if you can qualify for residency, go for it, you might have a chance, if not, don’t bother.

Yeah, I’m a resident of CA… I live in CA normally, I’m still technically a California person; my birth certificate, my SSN, and my driver’s licenses are all from CA. So I should pretty much just raise my GPA and I’ll have a good chance?
