I am currently a freshman at a community college called Mott. My grades were extremely bad in highschool, for multiple reasons. One was a family issue for a while, the other was just pure laziness. I really want to go to a university, once I clean my grades up here. My GPA was incredibly bad, like a 2.0. I know, I know it’s terrible. But nonetheless, im wondering if I get a 3.8-4.0 my first semester(I have already had exams in college and I got a 4.0 on all), could I possibly transfer to a university like Central Michigan? Also, I’m going to retake my ACT, which was a mediocore score. My counselor at my highschool said it was possible, if my GPA was really high my first semester. What to do you think? If I write a killer application essay, get 3.8-4.0 GPA, do great on SAT, could I transfer after one semester, to attend next fall? Thanks
A university would want to see your full first year grades. You may be able to start at CMU next September but you likely will not get your decision until next summer.
Thank you for the response. Would you suggest I apply immediately following my first semester?
You need to ask them what their transfer requirements are.

A lot of information on this page
It says that if you have fewer than 24 credits that your high school transcript is required to be submitted and ACT/SAT score submission is strongly recommended.
^very good advice (under “additional advice” on above website)
Okay thank you. Since my GPA wasn’t good in highschool, and it’s required to submit, do you think that if I get between 3.8 and 4.0 at Mott my first semester, that they might look past my old highschool GPA?
You will need to attend CC for a full year. You need to check with CMU about transferable credits. Once you are over 24 transferable credits, it sounds like your high school record won’t be considered anymore.
But talk to your CC advisor and transfer debt at CMU to make sure.

I will for sure, but wouldn’t it be too late to apply if I waited until my spring semester ends? It ends May 8th, do you think it will get out on time?
You will schedule classes for spring semester probably in November. By January you will know your grades from first semester. I think the above link said to apply six months before the term you want to attend starts.
Read the information so you have a good transfer plan.
Okay thank you. What I’ll do is meet with my current CC, and also meet with CMU to discuss the transfer. Just one more question, so you think I should apply after my first semester? Don’t they need my full year?
I don’t know. That’s why I said you might have to attend CC for least a year.
That’s what you need to find out.
Right, I’ll ask the transfer advisors. Thank you for your help
