Can I write about an athlete's influence?

I was gonna plan on writing about an athlete turning down money to play for a team that he wanted to play for? So essentially happiness > money? Is this too cliche to write about?

It's not cliche if applied to a certain aspect of your life. If you simply tell the athlete's story and the "happiness > money" conclusion you made, you're not showing enough of yourself. However, if you use that idea as a springboard to jump into a particular trait or belief of yours, you could make it work.
