Can i?

Hi guys,

I’m a french freshman student(14 years old).
I’m in love with the sciences, espacially aerospace engineering, so i want go into the MIT.
The problem is that i don’t have any extra’, no internship, no medal, nothing…so i’m wondering what can i do in aerospace/energy and something that can impress MIT and how.

Thank’s

It’s not about impressing MIT, but about reaching your full potential and knowing that in the end, everything you learned is for your own benefit.

Meanwhile… please refer to the four other threads you have started in this forum:

I agree with the above comment (btw @iceui2: do I know you? My roommate-to-be is from Palo Alto too. lol) I’d just add one more thing: take full advantage the resources available to you. International admissions at MIT is tough, but it is not impossible.

Here’s a newly started blog specifically designed to entertain, encourage, and (hopefully) enlighten int’l applicants interested in MIT: [-An Overly Excited MIT Student’s Random Thoughts-](http://wsjeffchen.blogspot.com/)
Stay tuned for the next few years if you’d like. (you’re so young omg! haha).

^Yup we both took Stanford math classes XD (and we both failed, but that’s not the point)

But every MIT intl student won medals and interships but in france we don’t have internships and no summer program…

^^Internships almost never exist for high school students, even in the U.S… Most high school students with research experience just email a professor and say, “Could I work in your lab?”

Stodaire, not every int’l student won medals and were interns. I’m sure that you are oversimplfying the situation regarding France and interships/summer programs.

First of all, with all honesty and respect, in a country like France, I can’t imagine such a sans-opportunity situation. Internships for HS students are pretty rare and it is pretty understandable to not to have any internship experience at all. On the other hand, you’d be able to find a summer program this way or that way.

Lets assume, in the whole France, there are no summer programs… You can definitly find one in US, UK, Germany, Spain… Just check all options before jumping into a conclusion.

In france there are just summer programs for literature…
I will participate in the "concours g

Look, you are trying to generalize/simplfy the situation. It’s a bad habit, don’t do this.

If you check the admits thread, you can clearly see while there are a number of students who won medals, there are those who were in competitions but didn’t get medals, and even those who didn’t even take part in a competition at all but demonstrated their skills and shed light into their situation via essays, GPA, letter of recommendations etc… Yes I’m talking about int’l admits.

Ok, i really think i can show them my love for the science by an essay…have a good recommendation letters and a good GPA…i’ll prepare the sat/toefl/sat II.
I give maths and physics lessons but not officially, is that count?

You can write it in your app. No highschool student teachs officialy, otherwise they would be classified as teachers :)

Ok, that’s cool.
And for an intl student, what does MIT prefer? I mean SAT/TOEFL, gpa, extra’ etc…

TOEFL would be more advantageous for a non-native speaker, CR in SAT1 may give you hard time. Do whatever you like.

Check the admits thread, answers to your questions lay there.

There are just 1-8 intl students…

Well there are just 100-150 admits so thats 5-10% that you have read thru :D

Also read the US admits too. They are looking for the same thing in both applicants, the quote is just lower for int’l.

there are just 2 intl per thread…
And do you think that it’s too late for me to impress them?

Too late? There are still 2+ years until you apply! (Actually I’d say it’s even too early for you be on CC! lol Go out and play!)

Also, please do not say things like “there are no X, Y, and Z in France.” MIT is most interested in applicants who seize opportunities around them and take full advantage of the resources available to them.

2+ years, yes but i really have nothing, next year i will practice tennis and cheese, i will participate at the "concours g

I thought you are HS junior.

First of all, please stop saying you don’t have anything available to you. Just read the participation list that you just wrote above. Its great. Not everybody gets into an olympiad and olympiad participators are pretty rare.

You’ll have to make a choice now or later, like most of us, to focus on U.S. admission systems or your national admission system. You can do both simultaneously but it may drain you quickly. The best is to learn the most from your school, then start shifting to focus on U.S. admission system around between the sophomore and junior year, IF you want to be a REALLY good candidate. Whatever you do, the point is don’t slack off.

So its just too early for you to focus on anything and say you don’t have anything. You just started, it is normal to have nothing at all at this point. Get to know your teachers, they may have info on projects or competitions local, national or international.

=> Yes but i won’t win anything…don’t say: “how do you know?” I won’t. And i saw in the thread of results, there are people who have a book of extra’…

=>I will work and if i’m not accepted in the MIT or my other top choice, i will-try to- go in a Grande Ecole…

=>Next year, i’m going to the best high school in my town( hard…), if i don’t get A+ as GPA, is it a problem or should i go to a normal high school?(the french system is really hard…)

There is no club in french high schools, just in extra’ is it a problem?
