Can mascots get any creepier?

I just shook my head when I saw this:

[London unveils creepy-looking mascots for 2012 Olympics - Fourth-Place Medal - Olympics - Yahoo! Sports](<a href=“Sports News, Scores, Fantasy Games - Yahoo Sports”>Sports News, Scores, Fantasy Games - Yahoo Sports)

The comments are spot on - “crotchless pants”, “teletubbies updated”, “pokemon”, etc.

I wonder what Sochi will unveil?

It’s the one eye effect that I find so disturbing - Cyclops meets Teletubby?

Sad, sad, sad…

You can see the mascots of the past Summer Games here:

Good Lord. Makes me embarrassed to be English. What were they thinking. Or perhaps the question should be what were they smoking?

The first paragraph sure made me chuckle though.

God, I pity the Brits having to look at that for 2 years. When Barcelona had the Olympics in '92, that Cobi was everywhere, on everything. He was bad, but nothing like these two.

What the . . .

W-why . . .

. . . . . . .

hides from the creepy eye monsters

ewww…

how phallic. One-eyed monsters indeed. What could they have been thinking?

Will there be an Olympic speed event for children running away and screaming in terror from the one-eyed monsters? And the eye - it’s HUGE!

Please tell me they didn’t pay someone to design these…

Not surprised. The British government has inflicted upon its citizenry extreme and heavy handed notions of political correctness for years. I guess they figure unless ET shows up, no one has reason to complain. And taste be damned.

Wow. Give these a 10 on the Creepy-o-meter. Can see these making children cry…

Are these really the official (final choice) mascots?

OTOH - I just looked at BunsenBurner’s link–
Athens in 2004 was no bargain either. Who designs these things?

I like the way one hand has a thumb and the other doesn’t.

US college mascot can be plenty creepy (and funny) too…

When it comes to Olympic mascots, being an American is no picnic either. The 1996 Atlanta mascot is just as ridiculous of the London ones, and the 1984 Los Angeles eagle was just warmed-over Disney. These mascots really went down hill starting in 1992 Barcelona.

We still have the Hodori coffee mug we bought at the 1988 Seoul games. He’s holding up fine. Maybe that’s what the Seoul games will be remembered for: the last decent mascot.

It’s funny the mascots are hideous, but the posters are for the most part quite nice: [Olympic Games Poster Quick View](Quickview Olympic Poster)
