Can my ECs pull me through?!

In a nutshell: I was in my University’s Honor’s program. My GPA was always above a 3.5. I hold several leadership roles in on-campus political organizations and have competed several political internships. The last year I failed every single class (just didn’t turn in the papers or do the exams). A teacher who had hired me to help with his booked expressed concern and urged me to see a doctor. The doctor diagnosed me with Major Depression disorder and determined I had developed some anxiety over school. I did not get the medical withdrawal paper work together in time and my University kicked me out. I stand a very slim chance at retroactive medical withdrawal due to crazy requirements. I would like to transfer to Emerson. Truly, it’s Emerson or bust. If i don’t get in there I’ll just work to get back into university here. But I’m looking at this situation as an opportunity to go to a school I’ve been drawn to since high school. I would be applying for the Political Communication major. It’s one of the few schools that offer this obscure major. It’s exactly what I want to do and study (at my former Uni I was doing a major/minor og political science and communication). I know Emerson is really competitive for theatre and journalism students. Will applying for a less popular major be an advantage? Do I have a shot? Will I have to spend some time in community college? I know I can get some great recommendations and my ECs show a very strong interest in my intended area of study. I also have a solid music background which I’m hoping would be looked on favorably by them. I’m taking some CLEP exams this month and going back to CC (where my GPA will reset and I know I’ll ace my classes) next semester. I’d like to apply for Fall 2010. I’ll be applying from out-of-state.
