If I don’t give her the password, which I doubt she wants, can she see my common application in any way shape or form? Will they email her a PDF or something of my application?
I want to apply to two schools in Scotland (Glasgow and Edinburgh) because my mother and family is overbearing and I need the escape. My mother is forcing me to apply to a school in state as well and says if I get in here I have to go here. I’m planning on either requesting one of the school’s satellite campuses over seas or just straight up bombing the essays. Is there any way that she can see that?
No, I don’t think she’ll be able to see any of your Common App. Just be to be safe just make sure that her email isn’t connected to your account or anything tho
Hi thanks, how can I see if her email is connected to it? I don’t think it is because I made the account and added the schools myself
How are you planning to pay for these schools in Scotand? Is the state school within commuting distance or would you be able to dorm there? What’s your backup plan if your parents won’t pay for you to go to Scotland and you’re successful in getting rejected from your state school? Are you comfortable attending a community college for 2 years? How will you pay for the last 2 years? Transfers don’t get much aid.
If you tell us your state, your stats, and how much your parents are willing to pay, we might be able to help you find affordable options.
Hi, my mom is willing to pay for Scotland and NY, she just wants me to go to NY school over Scotland if I get accepted here and there. I have a 3.75 GPA unweighted, 3 AP grades at 4 and 1 at 5, ACT score of 31
State school is within commute distance.
How much will your parents pay per year? SUNY tuition is ~$8k. Will they pay that? You can borrow ~$5500/year. If you work summers, you can probably earn another ~$3k. That would cover room & board at some very good colleges. If you can raise your ACT a couple points, you may be able to get a tuition scholarship to cover the rest. Check the guaranteed merit thread pinned to the top of the financial aid forum for a list of possibilities.
The thing is, I really do not want to stay in state. The point is so I can not be in the state. I do not want to stay home for college after being controlled my whole life (to me it defeats the purpose of college)
You can also apply to the UK unis via UCAS and keep it completely separate from your Common App. It’s one app fee for up to 5 UK unis.
Also, be careful about letting your need to get away lead you into to make choices that could come back to bite you. If you are living at college your parents have next to no control over your life- they can not see any of your records, and they can’t even ‘drop in’ and visit you (security swipes on the dorm doors see to that). Their only piece of control is the checkbook- which they have whether you are 5 miles or 3000 miles away.
This is true. Thankfully since that time I have since convinced my mother to be on board with me leaving
Can you apply to in-state schools too far from home to commute? You won’t see too much of your parents if you do that.
Kids often see distance as the way to separate from parents. But really, even a few hours away (and a heap of maturity) can make a world of difference.
There was the case of D1’s freshman roomie whose Mom got a job across the street from campus, so she could spend more time with her girl. Commuted over an hour from home. But that’s incredibly rare and the mom was nuts. Best wishes.
