Can my unfortunate life circumstances help me through top college admissions?

@PawanGhimire @Classicgirl17 An overriding focus should be for essays to portray yourself as you really are with your own unique voice. They are not looking for beautiful writing style. Your English level is good enough. You should seriously consider applying to some Honors Colleges/Programs of few state schools which will give you merit based scholarships. As someone said, go for stars but don’t forget to apply to little hills.

Yes i have the essay completed, but i donot have anyone to review…i donot even have many friends in the school who can really help me, all of them are on their own…do u think posting essay here would be great idea??

@PawanGhimire No, don’t do that. That may cause unintended problems. Personally, I don’t want to review any college essays anymore, after I reviewed my own kid’s essays for Stanford REA application (got in) last year.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

No, it is not a good idea. You don’t want your personal information on the internet, nor do you want others to take your essays. You can PM your essays to any users who are willing to read them.

@PawanGhimire, you didn’t apply Restricted Early Action to Harvard and Early Decision to Vanderbilt, did you? You can’t do that.

Yes I did the same…but why?? my common app let me do this

The common app is just there for you to fill out, I don’t think it specifically will not let you apply early action binding for one college if you’ve already done it for another. I think you can change both to regular decision, that might be best?

No, it won’t let you apply for two colleges with early action. But it did let me apply Harvard as Restricted early action and Vanderbilt as early action. Maybe because early action for Harvard is non-binding

I’m happy to read your essays…i’ve read quite a bundle of them :). PM them my way.

OK till now
Colleges applied:
1 UCLA
2 UCSB
3 UCB
4 UCI
5 Vanderbilt
6 Harvard
7 CSUN
8 CSU poly tech
9 CSULA

@PawanGhimire, Vanderbilt does not have Early Action, only Early Decision. You can’t apply Restricted Early Action to Harvard and Early Decision to Vanderbilt. You need to contact one of those schools ASAP and switch one to Regular Decision.

Oh really…ill do it…thanks but what is the problem with it…how does this work??

“If you apply to Harvard under our Early Action program, you may also apply at the same time to any public college/university or to foreign universities but you are restricted from applying to other private universities’ Early Action and Early Decision programs.” https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/apply/application-timeline/restrictive-early-action

What happens if i get accepted to only one of these colleges…Will they know it??

What would be good??to send Harvard to regular decision or Vanderbilt to regular??

You should assume that it is a question is not if they will find out, but when

Well, Harvard explains it quite well.

Violating the ED/SCEA agreement counts as misrepresentation.

ok ill change the vanderbilt to early decision

Ok can I do early decision II to VAnderbilt…It is after harvard decision date

There are many other private schools with large endowments that can give you fin aid without debt.
Yale, MIT, Cornell. There are others than give great merit for their absolutely top candidates, all over the country. And for states public universities, since you are considering east coast, SUNY (New York) public schools are modest cost for out of state students, but a private school could be cheaper if they really want you.

I would forget the cost and research schools you will be happy with, and apply to many, hoping to get a package you can afford. SUNY is probably the least costly state school, look them up and that can be the max you would have to pay, maybe less at Harvard if you are lucky.

Note if you get As at any school in that major, you can go to grad school or get a good job.
Just study hard when you get there !!!

Thnks suzy…i wouldnot have know it without you
