Can older ladies still dance in NYC?

I’m going to NYC next month for a weekend of shopping and eating out with girlfriends. We’d like to go out on either Friday or Saturday night to some sort of club where we can dance…for fun and exercise to work off all the luscious meals we’re sure to enjoy. All happily married (all in our early 50s), so no pick-up places. We’re looking for an upscale, dress up atmosphere. If it’s part of a restaurant - dinner and dancing, that’s fine. Staying on the upper east side, so walking or a short cab ride. Would love to hear some ideas!

I have no idea so I asked a friend who would know. He suggested:

  1. Lavo [Welcome to LAVO New York City](http://www.lavony.com/)
  2. The General [EMM Group | THE GENERAL - EMM GROUP - MARK BIRNBAUM & EUGENE REMM](http://emmgrp.com/restaurants/the-general/)
  3. Beauty & Essex [Beauty & Essex - 146 Essex Street NYC - (212) 614-0146](http://beautyandessex.com/home/)
and anything in the Meatpacking District (Far West Greenwich Village) (you can google)

Lavo is the closest to where you’ll be staying–the rest are downtown but maybe worth a cab ride.

Oh, and he added Stanton Social (also downtown):

If this were a year from now I’d recommend the Rainbow Room, but alas it’s closed at the moment: [Rockefeller Center’s iconic Rainbow Room to reopen in fall 2014](<a href=“New York News - New York Daily News”>Rockefeller Center's iconic Rainbow Room to reopen in fall 2014).

For swing dancing, this place is supposed to be great: [Swing 46 | Dining and Dancing, Live Music, Swing and Jazz](http://swing46.com/)

Perhaps not exactly the atmosphere you were looking for, but it is enormously popular (and run by my niece’s H, among others):

[The Freedom Dance Party](http://freedomdanceparty.com/)

I don’t think it’s a pick up kind of thing. I think it’s a party where a group of friends could book a table and dance the night away without attracting any undesirable attention.

Thanks for the great info. The Freedom Dance Party looks fantastic, but the crowd may be too “energetic” for us. I’ve always wanted to go to the Rainbow Room - it would be fun to get dressed up and go with H, if I could ever talk him into it. We’re planning on Lavo - I was happy to see that they take table reservations for the lounge, so we’ll be able to sit down and rest occasionally.
