Can playing Guitar help in admission?

I was wondering if playing guitar (both classical and acoustic) could possible help any ideas?

Erm…I play percussion.
Half the people in the US play either drums or guitar…or piano… So probably not too much unless you’re going for music major. But it couldn’t hurt to mention it…

Could it help?
Yes
Would it make a real big impact?
No.

Unless you are some child prodigy and have won international accolades, it probably won’t be that much of a help. It will show that you are dedicated to something though.

Some folks in computer science and other disciplines that rely heavily on math believe that the best candidates are musical (old studies about the way the brain works and a lot of practical experience). It certainly won’t hurt and it might be more notable if you don’t mention it.

It might be a bigger factor in hiring after school, though, since I know a lot of people doing college hiring in my firm mention it. FWIW, we favor musicians who play in band, orchestra or any group as those experiences also teach team work.

Did it help John Mayer? (Didn’t he got to Brown?)

whoops?! not sure where I got that idea… briefly at Berklee…

I know of a kid who’s interview with a Harvard alum consisted of his playing guitar – he was offered admission.

cool anyway don’t really like 'vard though to me its just a name and 42,000 too much

Yeah, I don’t know about John Mayer at Brown but definitely at Berklee before he decided to quit.

Lots of people play guitar. (I don’t know if it’s just my town, but there are a LOT of garage bands.) Unless you’ve done something unique/outstanding, I wouldn’t think that it would really help all that much in admissions… but it definitely wouldn’t hurt.

There are lots of guitar players, but most of them suck. Really good jazz and classical guitar players I would say are much harder to find than Trumpet, Violin, etc.

Mayer went to berklee. which has an 80% acceptance rate. it’s actually genius. because lotsa people go and they dont have a super-high retention, so they take ur money and then u leave lol or fail out or w/e…from what people have told me.
