S added a last minute app that requests two teacher recommendations. All his other applications want just one letter so he needs to find someone quick for the 11/15 deadline. I’m wondering if it’s ok to use his EMT teacher who loves him. (This is a double period daily class that helps the students to become EMT certified by the end of the school year if they complete all the observation hours and testing.) The college does not provide ANY guidelines on what type of recommendations are acceptable. His other recommendation is from a social studies teacher. There are definitely other options available but I think this recommendation would be glowing. What do y’all think?
I can’t think of a single example of a college that has ever been mentioned on CC, unless it was a total safety or vocational college, that I’d advise not using an academic teacher for the teacher rec. Where the college allows, your example is better as an optional rec
No offense to teachers of vocational subjects.
Ok then, we’ll move on to the physics or pre-calc teacher. ![]()
Your S can always email the college admission officer for guidance but typically schools look for LORs from core academic classroom teachers.
If this (or any) college accepts a supplemental (non-academic) LOR, the EMT teacher could be considered.
