Can SAT Prep classes HURT??

I’m so grateful for all the resources we have on CC, and because this site has transformed my mindset about college as well, I feel like I’m motivated and resourced enough to self-study. However, my mom insists that I go to a prep class 4 hours, 3 times a week. It is an Asian place, of course, could this class be a waste of time and actually HURT my chances of performing on the SATs?

You’ll never get the time back

Yes. It stresses you out, first of all. I think the biggest problem is that everyone has their own algorithms for solving problems and your brain naturally goes with what seems natural when you see a problem. However, other people force their methods (which I’m sure work for some) on you, which could screw you up. You know yourself better than anyone else and I’m sure you’re mature enough to make your own decision about what’s best for your future. Personally, my test preparation involves doing nothing. It works for me. It probably wouldn’t work [well] for most people, but that just goes to show how differently people’s brains function.

yea i agree with what hyeran said… SAT prep academy can help but mostly i believe it is somewhat waste of time. all they do is give out problems and make us to solve everyday… i mean that is practically all we do… so i would recommend that you should buy some books via Amazon and study it instead.

some books that i would recommend are;
Barons
Official guide to SAT (a.k.a. the blue book)
James hong SAT critical reading

i wish you luck:)
