My niece, who is 16, and two of her friends, along with their college-age girl scout leader, are considering a long-weekend trip to Gatlinburg (they started out with grander plans but this might actually fit their budget). They have found some websites that rent cabins but it’s hard to tell how reputable they are. Does anyone have any experience renting a cabin in this area? Do not need fancy, just safe and clean. They are looking to go the first week in January. Would that be a crazy time to go?

I live in Northeast Tennessee about an hour from Gatlinburg and let me tell you, there’s not one place I know of in NE TN that’s unsafe. There are some places that I’d rather be than others, but none in which you pose a serious risk by being there. Any cabin should be safe.

know too, that most cabins for lease are higher in mountains, farther from “the strip” and can be difficult driving in winter.
