Anyone here a current or former University of California employee? My husband and I both worked for the UC system for 8 years in the 1990s. We are vested. Will we still get a pension? (We’re around 15-20 years from retirement.) I vaguely remember doing some kind of calculator and it telling me I would get something like $800/month at retirement. I don’t know if that was in current or future dollars. Is this still on the table? Given the condition of the California state finances, do you think we will get anything at all?

Once you are 50 you have the option of drawing a monthly amount that is calculated using your age and years of employment, or “service” as they like to call it, or a lump sum. I think the state stopped contributing to UCRP in the 90’s, when it was overfunded and never resumed contributions after the financial crisis. Current employees now pay into the system to keep it viable, unlike the lucky people employed in the 90’s who paid nothing.

Thanks, I will contact them.
