My girlfriend is going to be 17 when she graduates and her mother thinks she can tell her where she can go. Her mom told her that she is going to the air force academy but she wants to go to any other college besides there. Is her mother in the right for thinking she can force her to go somewhere?

Don’t get in the middle of a mother/daughter battle.
You just be supportive of your gf.

Once she’s 18 she can live on her own and make her own decisions – but she may have to pay for college herself.

I agree with Batllo. Be supportive of her, but don’t get in the middle.

Some might argue that if she depends on her mother financially to pay for the tuition, then yes, her mother could have a final say on where she goes to college. Still, her mother would be using this power wrongly by forcing her daughter to go somewhere completely against her will. If the girl does not depend on her mother to pay for college, then no, I see no reason why she could be forced to attend an institution she doesn’t want to.

The Air Force Academy is a school that the daughter should want to go, it’s a big commitment. The mom shouldn’t try to force her to go and should let her make her own decisions. However, I think you should stay out of the fight (you can still be supportive though, like the others have said).

The Air Force Academy is not easy to be accepted into. This may be putting the cart before the horse…

Let’s just say that if she does go to USAFA and doesn’t want to be there, she’ll get many opportunities to drop out, before the summer is even over.

The service academies are a bit different in that the person attending is agreeing to service to country in exchange for an education. Her mother can refuse to pay for another school, and at 17 she would need her mother’s signature to enter into any military commitment, however her mother can not force her into any military commitment at any age.

No, her mother cannot force her daughter to go to the Air Force Academy. (I know we are only getting one side here, but what kind of manipulative freak is this woman?)

All the girl has to do is say in the interview, “I don’t want to go here, my mother is forcing me to apply.” Game over, her mother loses.

Be supportive of your GF, don’t get in the middle of it. Encourage your GF to seek out other support from other family.

Isn’t it very difficult to get an appt to military academy? If so, I doubt this student would get an appt since it’s unlikely she’d get one. From what I understand, students who want appts, have to jump thru some hoops to get one.

I wonder why the mom thinks that her D would just get to go to the AF Academy based on her mom’s desire that she goes.

Getting an appointment to one of the military academies is a long, difficult process. Mom sure wouldn’t be in charge of any of it, whether the daughter was interested or not. And all the daughter has to do is tell one of the many interviewers that she is being forced and that would be the end of the process. Sounds like mom doesn’t have a clue.
