Can students complain about a school of engineering to ABET?

Hello. I’m not asking this for me, but for my mom. She is attending a college and taking about 1-2 classes each semester in junior-graduate level engineering classes. She has a bachelors in EEE from a couple decades ago and has been returning to school to update her skills and become employable again, after all us kids go off to college or whatever. Anyways, for years, the classes at the college have been very bad. The instructors are disorganized, unprofessional, and every class turns out to be a disaster. The teachers can’t teach for the most part, honestly. She gets high grades in the classes, but the way the classes are run is disgraceful and often unfair. She sometimes grumbles that the college of engineering (or at least the particular department that she is taking classes in) should lose its accreditation for its lack of quality education. What I’m wondering is, is there any way people know of that she can complain about the situation, to ABET? I see that you can complain to them, but the part I am wary of is this:

"Complaints
ABET will review all complaints from any source, including students, against either an accredited program or ABET itself.

Limit of ABET’s Authority
ABET cannot insert itself into institutional issues regarding faculty, professional staff, or student rights. ABET does not mediate individual grievances against a program or institution.

Complaint Process
Complaints must be written and signed.
Complaints are acknowledged within 14 days.
The Executive Director determines if the complaint is within ABET’s scope.

If not, the complainant is notified and no further action is taken.
If yes, the Executive Director notifies the complainant and forwards the complaint to the appropriate ABET personnel within 14 days. An investigation is launched."

Does that mean that since my mom would be the only one filing the complaint, her complaint might be seen as a personal issue with professors? There would be more than one, because every class at the university is just awful.

@albert69 Is she going to transfer? If not wouldn’t that be biting the hand that feeds you?

The accreditation process for ABET is not forever. Schools have to go through re-accreditation periodically.

Has your mom considered getting an entry level engineering job instead of taking all of these classes? Many engineering firms do on the job training anyway…and lots are looking for female engineering majors to hire.
