Can Ucsd/revelle Be An Enjoyable Experience?

UCSD is among my son’s final few choices … yes, no decision yet.
He’s been admitted to Revelle as biology (possible pre-med). I’m sure, despite its competitiveness, he’ll do fine there and UCSD is highly regarded. But I’d like him to also enjoy his college experience, too, and from all indications that might be tough at UCSD/Revelle.
Is that true? Is it mainly study/study/study there? My son enjoys first-run movies (I note that Price Center has a theater, but the movies seem to be a month or so behind debut dates). He also likes to lift weights and shoot hoops, and I note that the RIMAC facility is way across campus. Today, I found that there’s a main gym close by; what’s that like?
Can someone also speak about what’s available to students in La Jolla area (theaters, shops) that would be within WALKING distance from Revelle?
One final question that might help in the decision-making process: from what I gather, the food/dining dollars meals are served ala carte. Is that true? Do you find yourself pinching dining dollars so as not to run out? Some other schools have all-you-can-eat buffets (hence the “freshman 15”).
Well, any help would be appreciated as the clock is ticking.
Thank you in advance.

The study/study/study atmosphere is correct, Revelle houses almost all of the Pre-Meds at UCSD. As for your son enjoying movies, I was there last summer and they had a pre-screening of Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle months before it came out in theaters. Theres also shuttles that go to the local theater. Getting to Watch movies shouldnt be an issue there.

Revelle aslo has some awesome basketball courts seconds away from the fleet housing and the gym facilities are also great. Your son should have no problem workin out there.

Im sorry to say, but barely anything is within walking distance of Revelle. UCSD fixed this by fitting La Jolla with a decent shuttle system (free for students) that goes to local apartments, malls (UTC), and theaters.

I was also worried about the dining/dollars, but it seems appropriate. If I want to just grab a quick snack before class, I wouldnt have to waste a whole meal for it. You only gotta pay for what you eat.

Im personally going to Revelle next year, its got its drawbacks but it seems best for going pre-med.

dpatel: Thanks for the information. I just got off the phone with an admissions officer, and she (who also attended Revelle) made it sound a lot better than it’s perceived. The shuttle system sounds great; particularly the one to the university town center. She even made the fleets (“mud-houses”) sound livable. The dining concept sounds fine, but I heard food is so-so and kind of overpriced for a college campus. Son loves the buffet; maybe that’s why he works out to stay trim! Well, there’s four days to go and four schools still on the table… I think we’ll all be happy when this is finally over. Again, thanks and good luck next year at UCSD/Revelle.

No problem, im sure your son will be happy wherever he goes.

I don’t understand how people classify schools as “study” schools. For instance, what if in the next few years UCSD has a surge in social people. The only ones who would know are the ones who attend UCSD and the rest of the nation will still look at UCSD as being a “study” school. I’m sure there are parties and very social people at every school.

Id love to think that, but thats just the way it is. The combo of pre-meds and ucla/ucb rejects doesnt foster highly social people. Not many parties are on campus, and you gotta be 21 for most of the stuff off campus. And many people go south of the border, but everyone tells me thats the kind of thing you only do once.

It’d be nice if things would change within the next few years, but I wouldnt count on it.

I understand the stigma of pre-meds not being highly social, but what does being rejected by ucla/ucb have to do with one’s level of sociabililty?

^That’s exactly what i mean. I’m a ucla/ucb reject but its not like I’m all depressed about it and don’t go out anymore. I would have gone to ucla or ucb over ucsd because they definately seem like funner schools. But I’m satisfied with ucsd. Anyway, my friends and I are going to make ucsd more social!

A lot of people dont look at the positives like you do. They didnt want to settle with UCSD and come in the fall with an extremely bitter attitude.

Change would be great at UCSD, ill do nothin but help the problem next year =).

Jeeze. How can you still be bitter about rejections after your last summer of high school?

I was thinking and you would think that ucla and berkeley are the “study” schools since everyone there basically had 4.0+ and 1350+ in high school. While at ucsd ppl get in with less steller stats and were probably not bookworms in high school. Too bad ucla and berkeley are funner campuses though =[

Someone generalized this for me.

UCLA and Cal are where the naturally smart people get in. Not necessarily hard working or people who study alot. Just people who naturally do well and get good grades. You know… those bastards :)

UCSD are people who get good grades …but wiht lots of hard work involved.

I’m sure there’s gonna be some interesting respones to that. :)

Nice ■■■■■■■■ silverwolf. This thread that is as old as earth. Next question please.

What’s the big hooplah about a dead campus…do you have to be friends with 10000 people to be social? YOU GUYS ARE ALL SOCIAL SLUTS! just find your niche of friends, get laid, and go to the beach on a sunny day !>@?!

good plan lol

HAHA I like. I don’t know how old this thread is. CC sends me emails to check out specific topics. So… thats why I’m here lol

Actually, silver, i know kids who got into to UCLA UCB & UCSD, Regents in each and are only considering UCSD. your theory has holes

I love how people can be bitter about attending a top 10 public university.

It’s not my theory. It’s something I picked up from people.

I did mention it is highly generalized. As in, it does not include the majority of the people. Just some people see it that way.

Hmm… I forgot what I was going to say.

i guess it is important to not perpetuate generalizations about the typical ucsd student, especially since that stereotype is no longer true. i gave up the regents and chancellors’ scholarship at ucb, the college honors program at ucla, and the regents and alumni scholarships at ucd to attend ucsd as a premed student. just like me, there are many students who actually choose to go to ucsd, not because they were rejected from ucb and/or ucla!

hey ceetee, what did you decide?

“Jeeze. How can you still be bitter about rejections after your last summer of high school?”

Working hard for four years and not getting into your top choices sucks. You seem to be optimisitc about UCSD which is great, but not everyone has a positive attitude. If I didnt get into my top picks and ended up at Irvine I’d be pretty bummed.

Im not trying to badmouth UCSD, I got into Cal and LA but im choosing to attend UCSD this fall. Im just trying to tell you how the campus is. Ive visitied the campus dozens of times. Ive had both of my sisters go to Revelle, (3 years apart) and things are not changing for the better.
