I have a friend who is applying to undergrad right now. He is an international student (from China) and is wanting to come to the USA for undergrad. He is a carrier for Hepatitis B though and he has it under control but he is worried that this may be a factor in universities’ decisions. The USA (along with other countries like the UK) will allow him to come over but his worry is that a college may not admit him because of his chronic disease. Does anyone have any insight into this? Is this a valid concern? Who can he contact to find more out?

Is there something in the international application that will allow the colleges to know about the disease? I don’t recall there being questions about health on the admission aps for citizens.

The college will not ask, but the US government will when he applies for a visa to attend the school. This may be a problem for them, but should not affect the colleges’ decision.

I wonder if the hep b will be noted in the final visa paperwork, and be visible to the school if copies of the paperwork is required with application? Also, I would think if visa were being applied for following admission decision, whether the application would ask if there were any cause/condition the applicant had currently or in the past that may delay the application process or be reason for denial of visa. If there is such a question, that may be the place where it is disclosed.
