Can we go back to having separate threads for celebrity deaths? When the catch-all thread starts getting traction you have to open it and get to the bottom to see whether someone new died and who it was. Time-consuming and, really, can’t in death each person get their flowers?
Maybe I was looking in the wrong place, but I looked under your most recent posts and didn’t see it. @Youdon_tsay
If you’re watching the thread, you get a blue circle when there are new posts and clicking the thread brings you to the first unread thread
How time consuming is this? A new post on the thread brings it up to the top. The death of Kris Kristofferson was posted on the consolidated thread at 645 pm ET. A standalone KK Died thread, since deleted, was started 39 minutes later.
IIRC, having a consolidated thread was at the request of users.
While all passings are sad, most of these deaths get about 10 comments before fading. I’m sure the mods will use their discretion if a major figure dies
Fwiw, I didn’t even know that one consolidated thread existed so when I went to post about Kris Kristofferson‘s death, I had no clue that there was a unified list somewhere
It’s not like it’s hours out of my day but if there are new posts then you click to see who it is and maybe I don’t know or don’t care who that person is. If it were a separate thread, I can just drive on by.
I agree that most threads don’t get a LOT of comments, so they die a relatively quick death (no pun intended) so no harm, no foul. They move down the feed and are never to be seen again. But lumping them together, IMO, lessens the utility of cc. A quick scan often gives me news I didn’t know. I don’t want to have to click on the death thread only to see the new death is the third Teletubby, no disrespect intended to Laa Laa.
I don’t believe the primary mission if College Confidential is to provide death announcements. And if clicking one thread is too onerous, perhaps you’re better served bookmarking the below to see who died:
Honestly this thread never popped up for me (that I’m aware) until I posted about Pete Rose and it was merged into it.
I don’t want to keep commenting on this thread about obits in the cafe, but I would like to point out while this may be unusual, in the past 24 hours there would have been FIVE separate threads about “celebs” dying. We might need a “Parent Cafe - Obituary Section”!!!
Editing to say my point is I hate to see the cafe cluttered with a thread for each of these noteworthy people. And that it is hard to determine who IS worthy of a separate thread.
To add to @abasket post.
I know that I was one who thought it was prudent to have all RIP’s in one place.
I also think that one thread is plenty. One you start separating by profession, it could get out of hand quickly.
Sports, actors, obscure 60’s band members. I for one am happy to have all the RIP’s together.
It’s been a busy week for deaths which is unusual. That’s why I think it feels like a lot.
