Can we stand another SAT subject test question?

I hope so! D20 has a solid list of reaches, targets and likelies. Background: she has a 4.29UW/4.64W; 1550 SAT (760E/790M). 4 AP classes so far (taking 5 this year) and scored 5s on each test. Looking to major in social sciences/humanities (maybe pre-law, maybe psychology; either with theatre minor. Mind is very open to new majors/concentrations.) She took her subject tests: 700 on Lit; 730 on both World History and US History. Only one school to which she is applying (Cornell) requires subject tests (they want 2 for college of Arts and Sciences). Didn’t see anything in their CDS about comparable subject test scores. Wondering if I have to cajole this child to take them again or if the general consensus among the experts here is that those scores are good enough to not be detrimental. We are not reporting these scores to her other schools because they do not require them.

I think she is fine, especially with the SAT and AP test scores. Her time is better spent on polishing her app’s.

Can only speak for STEM kids into Cornell…I was told their app is only helped if over 750 (GC). And my kid’s tests were Chemistry and Math 2. Because Cornell recommends 2 of the 3 (physics, chem or math), he would have retaken if below 750. Perhaps humanities is a different story.
And hugs…if my kid had to take one more test, I think he would have punted on the whole thing. By now, the testing has just gotten absurd. No mas. No mas. Hopefully your kid is more understanding.

I do not know if Cornell Averages or adds the SAT2 test results with the SAT1 to get a single test score used in their assessment matrix. Harvard used to do that—4000 was the top score. Perhaps someone knows, perhaps you can ask admission if they add up the SAT 1 and 2

No. No, she is not. She is OVER all of this. When I broached the topic I got “I’m sorry! I’m sorry I didn’t get 800 on all of them!” in return. I would love to not have to bribe her to prep and take some again.

I would say it depends on how much she really wants to go to Cornell ; )
My D had only one school that recommended subject tests and D refused to take them. It wasn’t her top choice school and she said if they rejected her because of that, so be it (she was indeed rejected).

I’m in the exact same place with my D20 - although in her case the school only recommends doesn’t require. She’s waiting for her schedule to solidify for fall, and it’s highly likely she’s going to not take the second one (she already has Math 2). Even if she signs up for it, I question if she’ll have the bandwidth to do any prep which will probably just make it a waste of time and money anyway. It helps that the school isn’t her top choice, it may have made her decision more difficult.

Sigh. I’m sorry. I know. Back some years ago when I was applying to colleges, and my oldest ones, SAT2s were essential at the most selective schools. I’m seeing that now they have become optional, recommended rather than required. I remember how much trouble it was getting those tests results up there —and he took the SAT1(3 part in his day) 3 times! On top of trying to get 2 decent SAT2 scores. For him, it did make a difference. His coach at the colleges said so, his GC said so. But he didn’t have the stellar SAT1 scores your DD does. He nailed it with the SAT2s.

I was exhilarated that my youngest didn’t need anything other than the ACT. I just noticed his school now asks for SAT2s I’m so glad he dodged that bullet.

Call Cornell and ask Admissions how they evaluate the SAT2s. I don’t have any clue what they do. Two of mine were accepted there and they both had very high SAT2s, one much lower SAT1s, both with much lower Grades than your DD. Both applied to the NY landgrant schools , not CAS. And it’s been well over 10 years

Honestly, I suspect those are fine, especially if she reports the AP exams.

if she’s done, she’s done, there’s not much you can do now, I would ease off taking them again.

I agree. It would be very hard to get better scores now when the material from the classes is no longer fresh in her mind. My younger son who got a 790 on SAT R also got “only” a 700 on the Lit subject test. (Which he took after getting a 610 on Math2). He got into Tufts, Vassar and U of Chicago a while back now.

Seeing that her SAT math score was 790, it is quite likely that she could get an 800 on the Math Level 2 SAT Subject Test. The percentile for an 800 is one of the lowest. It varies from year to year but was at 81st percentile in 2018. She would need to get one of the study books and take practice tests to get her speed up. My sons used Barron’s. Just keep in mind that scores on the practice tests may be a bit lower than what she would make on the real test.
