Can you be on the board of two nonprofits?

I need help!! I’m the founder and executive director of a nonprofit, and an organization I’ve been volunteering for asked me to apply for the operations director position for their nonprofit. I would love to have this role as I’m extremely passionate about their cause, however I don’t want colleges to think I’m just trying to boost my application. PLEASE HELP!

Yes you can. It depends on what THEIR rules are (each non-profit).

You certainly can in terms of college admissions. There’s no rule from colleges that says you can’t work for two charities.

You’ll be fine in terms of college admissions. Otherwise, I’m on the board of two non-profits and it’s not a problem.

Thank you guys!! I was just worried colleges wouldn’t see me as loyal to the nonprofit I founded and am the director of. So glad to hear it should be ok

Operations director is not necessarily a board position. Are you sure they are asking you to be a voting board member or are they offering you a job?

Just be sure these non-profits are worthy operations, not the latest way to recreate what’s already out there. One doesn’t always need to reinvent the wheel, when he could be part of a respected senior entity, already doing the work, with a track record. Or not something formed as a NP that could have been done without that status. Just founding something and setting it up as a NP or joining a friend’s may not be an “it.”

But sure, many adults serve on multiple boards.

@twoinanddone I believe it is actually a staff position!

@lookingforward the nonprofit I’m the founder/executive director of is the only one in America with our program in hospitals!
