<p>So long as it’s in good taste, I don’t see what the problem is. It’s not as if they’re ever really going to find out that you never, say, conquered your fear of heights by flying in an airplane for the first time a year ago.</p>
<p>The point of each example is to show how well you can connect ideas by reasoning to support your argument, not to show how much you know, so, yes, you can make things up. If you make a blatantly incorrect statement (like a gigantic historical inaccuracy), then it would affect the coherency of your essay and thus negatively impact your score. Otherwise it is OK to make things up as long as there is good display of reasoning and sophistication involved.</p>
<p>You should try writing an essay in which you just BS examples.</p>
<p>Usually you find that it’s harder to make up coherent BS than just using a proper example. But it works for some people…</p>
