Can you double-major at Georgetown?

Can you double-major at Georgetown?

yes, but you don’t actually apply as a double major. it’s something you have to add on when you actually declare your major.

You can double major only within the school you are in. E.g. If you are in the College of Arts and Sciences, you cannot choose a second major in, say, the SFS. or Vice Versa.

shapeofhome, i don’t quite get what you mean by “something you have to add on?” can you clarify on that?

thanks for answering and kornpopz too. is there a link where i can get more information on double-majoring?

I think Shape of Home means that when you declare your major, you double major by checking two major boxes OR declare one major first, then add on another major at a later time.

I believe double majoring within a school relatively easy (don’t know much about NHS and SFS though). I think no more than 2 classes can cross-count for each major. And all major classes must be taken at Georgetown.

Also try this link;

sophomore called it. you cant apply with the intent to double major. you will be accepted only under one major, and when you actually declare (i think at the end of sophomore year) you choose two majors.

college and other schools yes i believe , SFS (as i am) NO

Is it possible to switch schools I have heard at best it is extremely difficult

In the college, you come in undeclared anyways, for anything other than the sciences or FLL (languages and linguistics). Everyone in the college must declare a major by March of their sophomore year, so anytime before that is when you pick your major or add a second major. In the MSB and SFS you can double-count classes towards a double major and/or minor (MSB) or a certificate (SFS), but you can’t double-count at all between majors in the college (you can only double count with distribution requirements).

Yes, you can switch schools. It’s not very hard, most people get accepted to switch, but you must complete an entire year in the school you applied to, and it can often be really hard to catch up on core requirements or prereq courses.

unless you switch this summer, right?

You would have to talk to admissions now, and may have to submit the essay for the other school, but most of the time they will still make you complete one full year in the school that you applied for before you are eligible to transfer.

As far as switching schools go, as far as I know its a relatively painless process which consists of writing a short essay as to why you want to change. I haven’t done it, but it’s supposed to be pretty easy

kornpopz, im pretty sure that isnt true, on the georgetown website for the faculty of languages and liguistics (part of georgetown college) they state that people sometimes double major across the FLL and the business school, so it doesnt have to be in the same part of the university if im not mistaken

i specifically asked the admissions rep at a information session and he told me u cannot double major between schools

It’s Georgetown policy that you CANNOT double-major across schools. The FLL offers a unique expanded Business Minor (one of my friends is in it), but this IS NOT A MAJOR.

Double majoring within the College is easy.

Most MSB students double major. Usually the combination is one quantitative and one qualitative, for example Finance and Management or Accounting and Marketing.

SFS and NHS students DO NOT double major.

Anyone who wants to pursue coursework outside of their school can do so as a Minor/Certificate. Almost all College majors are offered as a minor and available to all GU students, regardless of school. SFS and NHS offer Certificates (the equivalent of a minor) in specialized areas like Eastern European Studies (SFS) or International Health (NHS).

Hope it helps.

With a Language/Linguistics major, you can either do a business minor OR the equivalent of a major, and this is the only case where a Georgetown student can double-major between schools (minors and certificates are more flexible).

From the Georgetown College’s website:

The FLL also recognizes that an important aspect of intercultural exchange is linked to economic endeavors. Today’s corporate world places a high priority on developing an interculturally-sensitive and experienced work force with superior analytical skills and the ability to synthesize and present clearly complex and diverse information. To respond to these needs, the FLL offers its students a unique curricular option of combining a language or linguistics major with business coursework (the equivalent of a business major) or with a minor in business.

yeah, i heard in sfs you can’t double major, from a freshman who is attending georgetown’s sfs now.

I had a similar question…I am in the College, but I wanted to know if I could do a minor/certificate in International Health or if it was possible to do double minors across different schools (since you can’t do double majors across schools) ? The NHS website did describe certificates in International Health, but they made it seem as if it were only open to NHS students? Any clarification would be appreciated!

Is a Russian / Psychology double major possible in four years?
