Can You Freeze Cream Cheese?

I don’t expect this thread to last beyond three or four posts. If it continues, I’ll be amazed.

But Yeah, that’s the question. I’m going to my warehouse store tomorrow and want to know if I can buy the Philadelphia Cream Cheese in, like, five one-pound packages.

If I can’t freeze cream cheese, I’ll just buy one package at the regular grocery store.

You can freeze it but I personally don’t think it maintains its consistency when defrosted. It’s fine for cooking, but not so great on a bagel. That’s my opinion.

Well, I want to answer just to keep the thread going. ;)

Yahoo answers says:
Q: Can I freeze cream cheese?

A: We do not recommend freezing cheese that will be used for spreading due to a possible change in its texture; it may become curdled in appearance and have a crumbly texture. Regular brick cream cheese can be frozen up to 2 months for use as an ingredient in recipes.

Yes, it gets crumbly but works as an ingredient with other things in it.

Thank you, thank you.

It’s main use will be on bagels. I won’t buy it at the warehouse store.

VeryHappy…Phili Cream Cheese was on sale this week at Price Chopper for 99 cents a brick. Not bad. I bought two.

VeryHappy,
Read the expiration date at the warehouse store. Often cream cheese expiration is months away and safe to keep in the fridge, if you get many smaller packages in the warehouse size purchase. It ill not keep as long as the expiration date once the package is opened.

Hey Thumper, why don’t ya’ drive down here and bring me one? I’ll pay you the 99 cents! ;)

OMG, I just realized I misused “It’s” in my Post #5. I’m mortified. This is something I pride myself on . . . and it’s too late to edit the post!!

I am deeply disappointed in you, VH. ;)

Thumper, you can drive here and bring me one, too. I’ll give you a whole dollar.

The one-pound bricks of Phillie Cream Cheese were bundled in packages of six at the warehouse store. The expiration date was December something, 2009. I choose not to buy them.

I know you were all waiting for the update.

I think the whipped cream cheese is much better, anyway. It spreads easier.

Has anyone ever frozen cottage cheese?

My D just called and wants to know if she can freeze it and take it to school for lunch later…I said I’d ask…it’s just she and I, so there was a silence, and then…“ask who?”…I laughed…she said “whatever…just let me know!”

So can cottage cheese be frozen?

Cream cheese, cottage cheese. I just knew this thread would find its (note correct usage) way into a discussion of university v. LAC.

And more spelling/grammar booboos: In Post 10, it should have been “chose” (past tense), not “choose” (present tense).

I will proofread more carefully from now on!

VeryHappy and Binx…hmm…I could buy some of the “on sale” cream cheese and FREEZE it (yuck) and give it to you the next time you’re here…in the form of CHEESECAKE!!!

Whipped cream cheese is an abomination, but not as bad as whipped butter. :)

Yummmmmm, whipped butter, all soft and spreadable.

Thumper: It’s a deal. Name the date.
