<p>“I am always talking about the human condition—about what we can endure, dream, fail at, and still survive.” In this powerful statement, Dr. Angelou describes resilience in difficult situations. Like Dr. Angelou, I have been sexually abused by a family member. I refused to talk about what had transpired and instead ended up being eaten alive by my own grief. I became depressed and suicidal, and blamed myself and that I had deserved it. After two years of living under these tortuous conditions, I unsuccessfully tried to kill myself. After this happened, I moved out of my father’s house and into my grandparent’s. I then confided in my therapist about the sexual abuse and began the healing process. I now realize that what happened was not my fault and have used it as an opportunity to grow. I am no longer afraid to ask others for help when I am struggling and have become a more confident, outgoing individual. </p>
