The 7th grade Duke Tip student will first time try the SAT and has never taken the high school courses. Can you recommend good books for study and practice the SAT math and vocabulary?

Up your score is great, though it may be a bit PG-risque. It’s major selling points have to do with test-taking technique/getting familiar with the test. My favorite bit is their analysis on how to fill in ovals. Their technique really does save time and allow more focus on the questions themselves. Silly stuff like this, that really can take the first-timers edge off. Then, there are practice tests. Those help.

It’s typical for talent search kids to test without significant prep beyond becoming familiar with the test format. Unless your child has a particular goal (to make the cutoff for a summer program, for instance), I’d suggest making this year not a big deal.

My DD has taken the ACT for talent search, and I couldn’t convince her to even go through the sample mini test off the website. She did quite respectably, despite not having any exposure to most of the math concepts.

My recommendation is to back off and let your child enjoy middle school.
