Can you skip your Master's to get your PHD?

I wanna go for Communications at Steinhardt.

I hear that it’s better to go for your Master’s because you will have less classes to take when you go for your PHD. But can’t you also skip or shorten the path to your PHD by taking graduate-level classes while an undergrad?

Please help.

You don’t really shorten your path. The same number of hours are required to receive a Ph.D. whether or not you get a masters in between. For instance, a typical master’s degree requires 30 hours. A Ph.D. will require 60. If you already have a Master’s 30 of those will be the Master’s and you will need 30 more. If you don’t have a Master’s, 60 will still be required, so the number of semesters of study is not less.
