Can you waive "required" courses?

Is it possible to waive 18.01 and 18.02 through testing and simply “start off” with Linear Algebra (18.700) during your freshman year? Similarly, can you waive 8.01 and 8.02 through testing and begin with QM I (8.04)?

You can waive 18.01 with the AP Calc BC exam and 8.01 with both Physics C Exams. I’m pretty sure that people can test out of multivariable calc. I’m not sure if people can test out of E&M…

GIRs are pretty strict, but there are ASE’s for all of 18.01, 18.02, 8.01, 8.02. YOu might also want to apply for transfer credit if that applies to you.

Yes, you can ASE out of 18.01, 18.02, 8.01, and 8.02 or use AP credit for 18.01 (4,5 on Calc BC) and 8.01 (5s on both Phys C Mech and E&M). While there shouldn’t be a problem with taking 18.700, 8.03 is listed as a prereq (recommended) for 8.04.

So there’s no advanced standing exam for Differential Equations or Linear Algebra?

Also, I see that DE’s are not in the GIR, but I assume they would be required for certain majors?

Yes, there are advanced standing exams for 18.03 (diff eq) and 18.06 (linear algebra). More info here[/url”>Advanced Standing Examinations (ASE)]here from the math department. 18.03 is required for a bunch of majors – math, of course, and I think all of the engineering majors. You can see major requirements for all majors here.

Importantly, taking an ASE or getting AP credit does not “waive” a GIR requirement – you actually get credit for it on your transcript. It’s as if you actually took the course at MIT.

If I’m interested in, say, a Biology or Chemistry major, would I need DE or LA? The link you sent me doesn’t seem to talk about required math courses for course 7.

If I don’t need to take these math classes, but I pass the ASEs anyway, do the credits count towards the general elective credits?

Neither Course 5 nor 7 require DE or LA. I would assume they then become general elective credits?

Yes, if you get ASE credit for a course that’s not required for your major, then it will count as general elective credit toward your degree. (Officially, either 18.06 or 18.03 could count as REST – Restricted Electives in Science/Technology – credit, but lots of other course 7 classes also count toward that requirement also.)

No math courses outside 18.01 and 18.02 are required for course 7.
