Technically, they didn’t approve doctor assisted suicide, they found the provision in Canada’s Criminal Code that criminalized the aiding and abetting of suicide efforts unconstitutional under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. There’s a difference legally, and practically.
I think it was a good decision and the fact that it was unanimous, although a bit surprising with this court, is telling. Now it is up to the politicians to enact legislation and the various groups who were interveners to determine future policies.
It continues to amaze me that we force individuals to live out their last days in pain rather than giving them a peaceful, controlled way out.
My grandparents moved to a state when they retired that allows for a compassionate end.
