canadian approved physical prior to study permit

has any body had to deal with obtaining a canadian approved physical before obtaining a study permit?

according to canadian immigrations, if an individual has resided in certain countries (guatemala being one of them), for six consecutive months, s/he is required to undergo a physical with a canadian approved physician before being able to obtain a study permit.

my son (us citizen) will be a freshman at mcgill in the fall having deferred for one year for gap year and did volunteer work in guatemala. He was there for total of eight months but not consecutively as he came back for three weeks over the holidays.

we have received very mixed interpretations of the six months, whether it is consecutive or total even though the regs clearly state consecutive.

has anybody dealt with this when applying for study permit and what was your experience?

thank you
