canadian medical school

i read somewhere they look only at your grades, and that mcats dont mean much for admission…

is canada a good alternative, i do know its a lot better than mexico and latin america, but is admission easier?

I’m not sure where you heard that; the people I’ve spoken with, and the websites I’ve read have all said that the MCAT is just as important as good grades. Some schools even set a minimum MCAT score for applicants (ie. UToronto requires a minimum of 9 in each section). For the Toronto Medical School, a GPA of 3.6-4.0 is considered competitive. Canadian medical schools also consider letters of recommendation, essays, extracurricular activities, and interviews.

Some Canadian medical schools (I don’t know how many) only consider applicants that are Canadian citizens/permenant residents.

Other Canadian medical schools will offer admissions for international students, but will limit the seats avaliable.

Another thing is that Canadian medical school admissions is becoming increasingly competitive, because there are only 2200 seats across the country. In an article written in March of 2005 (http://www.fims.uwo.ca/olr/Mar0905/MedSchools.html), Albert Schumacher, president of the Canadian Medical Association said, “I think most people would agree that there are four or five qualified applicants for every position. These are all people that have A or better averages.” For example, the story refers to one applicant who, from the description given, was a highly qualified student, yet wasn’t even able to get an interview at Queens or McMaster.
