Canceling credit card

Can you just cancel a credit card,

and by doing so, does it at all hurt your credit score. id love to cancel 1 of my 3. Just, because,

If you were to apply for other credit in the future, having less cards would mean your credit ceiling would be higher by the amount of the cancelled card.

In other words, if a card you plan to cancel gives you a credit limit of $5000, a new credit approver would have to figure into your potential debt the $5000 which you might run up on that existing card. With the card, they’d have to assume that you could max it out at any time and therefore have that amount of debt already before their new card, loan or mortgage.

As long as it’s paid in full or has no outstanding balance you can cancell the card. Just make sure afterwards that your credit report shows that it was cancelled by the cardholder.
