Canceling scores PLEASE HELP!

My son just came home from taking the SATs and said that after the part where they are required to write out the oath that you won’t reveal the questions, he got back on the wrong section in his test booklet and started again with the wrong section. He did not realize this until it was too late. He did not register to send these scores to any schools. Should we go ahead and cancel the scores or let the test be scored to see how he did on the sections he did correctly? Will anyone see the scores of this test if we don’t cancel them?

Do you mean he misbubbled the answer sheet?

If your son applies to a school that requires that he send all test scores, then he will have to send it.

Yes he misbubbled the answer sheet. I guess it would be best to cancel it, as we don’t know which schools he will be applying to and what their policies are. How do you find out if the school requires all scores?

If you order a hand scoring the CollegeBoard will adjust the score if it is clear that it was bubbled in the wrong section. They will probably not refund you the hand scoring fee, since it is your son’s mistake. If he thinks he otherwise did well, I would not cancel. I don’t know if you can order hand scoring before the scores come out but you might be able to. Otherwise, you can do it after scores come out and that should get you an adjusted score before the summer is over. My son did the same thing but luckily he realized in the middle of the test and had time to fix it.

Also, if he does do poorly and for some reason the CollegeBoard does not adjust the score, you can always put a note on your sons application explaining where that low score came from. I believe you need to check the website of each school to see which require all scores. I know Yale and Penn and Barnard do, but Harvard, Princeton and Columbia do not. I think most schools do not require all scores.

From College Board, an alphabetical list of universities and whether or not they require ALL scores to be submitted:

professionals.collegeboard.com/…/sat-score-use-practices-list.pdf

(If the above link doesn’t work, copy and paste following into Google to get to the .pdf file link:

‘SAT score-use practices by participating institution’)

Found the following info at Stanford website interesting as they go into more detail than College Board as to what scores exactly they require and how they deal with that info (they do require ALL SAT and ACT scores from all dates to be submitted. They claim though to ‘focus on’ the highest individual scores). Probably every other university website offers same kind of detail:

http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/freshman/testing.html

“For the SAT, we will focus on the highest individual Critical Reading, Math and Writing scores from all test sittings.”

and

“SAT Subject Tests are recommended but not required. Applicants who do not take SAT Subject Tests will not be at a disadvantage. Because SAT Subject Tests are optional, applicants may use Score Choice to selectively send their SAT Subject Test scores.”

Thank you all so much!
