Cancer Survivors...good news on Arimidex et al

This is big for many of us…We take it and it has side effects and isn’t always easy but with good results like this so worth it.

“A powerful new breast cancer drug has produced dramatic results. It greatly improves the chances of surviving the disease and could save thousands of lives. Research findings… suggest that Arimidex could prevent three quarters of them from suffering a relapse.
The latest research findings, from the largest cancer trial ever undertaken, show that post-menopausal women who took Arimidex daily for two and a half years after surgery were 77 percent less likely to develop cancer in the unaffected breast.
Dr Jeffrey Tobias of University-College Hospital, London, who is one of the trial investigators, called the results ‘exceptional’. ‘The reduction in the development of new cancers was very much greater than we had anticipated,’ he said.
Arimidex was also found to be more likely to prevent cancer recurring in the same breast or elsewhere in the body after surgery. Overall, women taking the new drug were about 20 per cent less likely to suffer any sort of relapse.”

My wife is a ten-year survivor this year. Her oncologist switched her to Arimidex about year 2 post-surgery and chemo from another drug because of the promising research. She went off Arimidex at the end of year 5. No sign of any kind of relapse, but you just never feel like you’re out of the woods. She has her yearly mammogram next week, so fingers crossed.

Thank you.

RSB, like your wife, I am never out of the woods but this study brings a light lift to the situation and to many women who are going through it or will. My mother had one cancer and then 15 years later another but in the end died of heart disease at 98. You just never know.

Well, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, in the U.S.

While reports of breakthroughs in treatment for early stage breast cancer have come around, it is estimated that approximately 40,000 women die of breast cancer every year in the United States alone.

We really have not made improvements on the mortality rates of metastatic breast cancer. With all of the Pink Ribbon advertising, we are still a long way from a cure. Only 2% of all money raised for BC goes to research for treating metastatic BC, with the lions share going to awareness, yet all of the women who die from the disease have metastatic BC.

40,000 deaths each year.

We’re long overdue for finding a cure.

I have had breast cancer three times. I am on tamoxifen now, I hate the side effects although they are tolerable, and then will switch to Arimedex, this is so nice to hear, thanking you for posting. (my first one was estrogen pos)
