Should I just redo my candidate profile in the additional information section in gateway? I was in a rush and screwed up a lot, a lot of missing awards, hours were very off, and a lot of positions were not stated. I feel like my candidate profile which is a big part of my application is underrepresenting me.
I don’t think they allow you to update your EC’s but they will add any new awards achieved, I also messed it up and emailed the admissions offices the changes I wanted to make.
You emailed admissions missed awards and positions ?
FWIW, I advised my son to limit his ECs to his favorite and most meaningful, and show the depth of them. A mix of sport, school and family interests. A laundry list of ten+ things felt too much for a very young teen. His school is 7-12, so no leadership opportunities available for Yrs 7 and 8. That’s just how it is. Anything more than what he included would have been fluff. The idea was to present himself authentically moreso than ambitiously. Not sure it was good advice, but we felt strongly that he should apply to schools that really fit him. There were four. We hope they see the fit as well. My point? I wouldn’t worry too much about layering more on top. But if you have something new to add, that might be good?
Is it a good idea to create a website with achievements, extracurriculars and interests and just upload the link in MultiMedia Section ? My daughter’s interest is in community service and she is not able to fit all the good work that she did in limited space available. TIA!
Unless you need a different format - video to show musical performance or visual to show art portfolio – I would not link things that can be listed to a multimedia file.
You should really try to summarize those activities in words so they are apparent in a first read of the application.
Thank you.And all of that within those 1500 characters in Part-1 field that says
"Academic, Athletic and Personal Achievements
List or briefly describe any academic or personal achievements of which you are especially proud. Use this area to note any academic honors you have received.?"
My daughter is struggling to fit her EC’s in this text box. She has pictures from her community service and competitions but no videos.
Each one of the awards would be about 50 characters. – Youth Volunteer of the Year, Smithtown Food Pantry, 2022, 2024.
These sb relatively recent - no need to highlight awards from election school. And for things like XYZ Youth Orchestra, First Chair Cello – you reference highest award.
At some level, the 1500 character limit is to help you keep it pithy AND to keep the focus on the most important ones. If you’re struggling with the limit, think about which ones say the most now.
Thank you so much for your guidance.
One more question - Do admission office reach back for more information related to candidates if they feel information available is not enough ?
I don’t think there’s a hard rule on this, but I would expect them to reach out if some part of the required/basic information was confusing (i.e., please send the name of the textbook used in “Accelerated 8th grade math”) but less likely if they don’t understand exactly what “Table Games Club” does.
Can i please ask one last question: Applying to L’ville - Does selecting “yes” to financial aid reduce the chance of getting in ? We are applying in day category, will be relocating closer if DD gets in. DD has a great SSAT score and her essays are great as well. EC’s are decent, wouldn’t say spectacular like what i saw on this forum. With this background on the candidate, just want to pick your brain on chances of getting in with & without aid. Thanks!
It always helps to be full pay because if they want you, they don’t have to go through the second test of determining if they have FA for you.
The reality is that if you need FA, you gain nothing by applying without it.
