Can't decide which is better

for the common app i am writing a general personal statement about what i value in an education, what i’d like to study, hopeful career plans, and so on. it is truly a statement on my person. yet doubts in my creative ability arose when, for claremont mckenna college, i wrote a supplemental essay about a significant leader and how i would advise him, and it is far superior to anything i can do with my current personal statement. i’d venture to say that the cmc essay is my best writing to date, ever.

at it’s core my essay is a debate about a single topic, and as such, satisfies the common app option for the general essay, and i would use it for non-cmc applications. i am not sure what to do though, because although i voice my opinion on the topic, it does not “convey a sense of who i really am” as much as i do in the first personal statement.

i’d rate the cmc essay a 10/10 and current personal statement a 7.5 in terms of pure sense of writing ability. what are your thoughts?

The reason the CMC essay is better, or seems better, is because you had a more concrete goal in your writing. I felt the same way. It was just the nature of the prompt. That being said, the PS will never feel as solid, because you are trying to capture an image of who you are in 500-800 words. It will always feel unfinished, or not as good as it could be. A 7.5-8.5 is ideal for a PS.

Keep the PS and try to do just as good of a job on your other supps is what I say.
